Born near Cleveland, Ohio, in 1966, Jim Winter grew up in the wilds of Northeast Ohio, raised on a steady diet of rock n roll, Certain Ethnic jokes, Cleveland Browns football, and blue collar culture. Tired of a life of chronic unemployment, Jim traveled south in 1991 to Cincinnati to start his chronic unemployment over in a fresh environment. There, he was introduced to Skyline chili, college basketball, and KlingonsTM.

He has been an unsuccessful salesman, a pizza delivery driver, and a factory grunt. In 1994, he sat down at his first Macintosh computer and discovered the tech boom. He wanted one. That same year, being broke, he instead bought a Packard Bell PC that launched him on his career in Information Technology. His first lesson in IT? Don't buy a Packard Bell. His second lesson? Windows 3.1 sucked.

Since 1999, he has worked for a company he refers to discreetly as BigHugeCo where he sits in a fabric-covered box for eight hours a day. In 2001, he began writing seriously, publishing his first story in Plots With Guns. For years, his focus was on Cleveland-based private detective Nick Kepler.
In 2008, he met and married the great love of his life, Juanita. They live together in the Cincinnati suburb of Deer Park with her son AJ. When not writing or being a corporate drone, Jim is a freelance web designer and has had a curious flirtation with standup comedy.
